CHANGED NOTHING… AND CHANGES EVERYTHING

When there is a huge hidden strategy – covert operations – and a massive strategic deployment of troops, we expect headlines! Large print; We interrupt this program to bring you the lastest news! In the Spring of 4-6 BC, the estimated year this all took place – it was quiet – truly a Silent Night. In the privacy of nothing more than a shed, the faint cry of a baby cut through the still night air. And that was it! We know now, and believe – that God made His entrance.  But apart from the sky being lit up by angels – given a private concert for some angels – there was no fanfare. Later, Magi would come and give their perspective… and their gifts. And that would disturb an old, diseased, paranoid king. But then Mary and Joseph and this new baby would slip into Egypt, their wave-making story would slip into the footnotes, and Rome would go on crushing and running the world. Nothing changed – and yet as the story moved through that century – and to the 2nd and the 3rd and the 4th – down to the 21st – it’s clear that everything changed! And yet for those who’ve heard and read and sung the story for years – nothing has changed. Ever. The battle against evil continues to roll through our planet like a giant snowball – picking up speed – and victims. Nothing’s changed – and yet everything has changed. The good news is that everyone’s story – you know, the one we’ve decided ourselves into – can change! Or… not.

Disturbing, Uncomfortable… and Comforting

If this story of Christmas is, in fact, authentic – and all of the evidence points in that direction, then it is actually not a cute story of “how the Christ-child came and taught us that in loving and giving we find our own happiness.” The story line is summarized by, “God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son so that whoever believes in Him will not perish. The story is about a beachhead called planet earth that God invaded to release people from an evil power so they can have freedom and life. Read Less

It’s beautiful, it’s holy, it’s pure love but, like any encroachment on enemy territory, it’s vicious and foreshadows a massive battle. And that makes sense of the horrifying spiritual vision of it all that John has in his book of the final things. But it’s real. The discomfort is real; the love is real. The sacrifice is real. And the COMFORT is real too. To think that God had been planning to make all things right for as long as all things were wrong is comforting. To realize that God so loved is comforting. To realize that nothing can stop this invasion, this kingdom – this slow take-over is very comforting!

Unbelievable, Fantastic… and Authentic

The stories around the religions of the world have always been, well, different. Odd. Sometimes weird. Like, demi-gods creating the earth and sky with pieces of themselves. Of course, the current evolutionary version is not all that believable, either – that something came from nothing. It would appear that we have to choose which unbelievable story to… well, believe. The story of Jesus doesn’t just appear out of nowhere. The world knew something was going to happen. The Romans, of course, thought it would be about them. The Jewish people had thousands of years of prophecies behind their expectations.  So, one day, on a backwoods part of Israel – a small insignificant outpost of the Roman Empire, it happened! It was a story; it was part of a story; it was the end of one story and the start of another, and it was the beginning of a story that continues. It’s true, verifiable and authentic. Honestly, at this juncture of earth’s history – it’s the only story that brings hope. Our question is, and always has been – how will this story, this PERSON, intersect and change MY story?
